Borjomi at a glance
Borjomi is a spa town in the Mtkvari valley in Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the Lesser Caucasus. The Central Park runs along the Borjomula stream and holds the mineral springs and, a little further up, open-air sulphur pools. The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is a different place with its own trails, huts and rules. People often mix the two up, so this guide keeps them apart.
The town works as a base. Bakuriani is about 30 km away, Akhaltsikhe with Rabati Castle about 50 km, and Vardzia about 110 km. Tbilisi is roughly two hours by road. You also find short guides to Tbilisi, Kakheti wine country and Georgia as a whole, always with Borjomi as the starting point. Entry fees and fares are in Georgian lari (GEL) as published for 2026 and can change. Tour cards show prices in US dollars.

Entry and travel advice โBorjomi: frequently asked questions
Where is Borjomi and how far is it from Tbilisi?
Borjomi lies in the Mtkvari valley in Samtskhe-Javakheti. By road it is about two hours from Tbilisi, two hours from Kutaisi and 4 hours 15 minutes from Batumi. See the getting there page for train, minibus and transfer.
Is the Central Park the same as the national park?
No. The Central Park is a town park with springs and a path to sulphur pools. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is a separate, much larger area with twelve trails and huts. Details are on the park page and the national park page.
Can I do Vardzia and Rabati as a day trip from Tbilisi?
It is a long day. Vardzia alone is about 4 hours by road each way from Tbilisi, and Rabati in Akhaltsikhe adds a stop on the way. Many people stay a night in Borjomi instead. See tours and day trips.
Do I need to register before hiking in the national park?
Yes. The park asks you to register at a visitor center before a tour, including for horse routes. The Borjomi center is on Meskheti Street 23. Hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:00 and weekends 09:00 to 16:00.
Which currency do I need?
The Georgian lari (GEL). Entry fees and fares on this site are in lari for 2026. Tour cards show US dollars, so the two are not directly comparable.
Is discoverborjomi.com the official site of Borjomi?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the municipality, the national park administration, a museum, a hotel or any tour operator.
