The independent Borjomi guide

Hiking around Borjomi

Borjomi is a good base for hiking in Georgia. Pick a one-day walk in the national park, a summer day near Bakuriani or a longer trek, and check the rules first.

Hiking around Borjomi

The forests of the Lesser Caucasus start at the edge of Borjomi. Most walkers head for Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, which has marked trails from 5.5 km to multi-day routes. A second choice is Bakuriani, a mountain village above the town and a hiking and cycling region in summer. Bigger treks in the Greater Caucasus, such as Kazbegi and Svaneti, are separate trips.

Hiking here is not the same as walking from the hotel door. Park routes need registration, huts are simple and the weather on a ridge can differ a lot from the weather in the town. This page helps you choose; the national park page has the trail numbers, huts and fees.

Day walks in the national park

Three routes that work for one day.

WalkLengthCharacterGood for
Likani Valley (trail 12)7 kmEasy, from the Likani ranger station to Likani villageFirst walk, families, a half day
Footprint (trail 6)13 kmMedium, Likani to Kvabiskhevi, steep descentA full day with a view over the valley
Meghruki Valley (trail 8)5.5 kmFrom Sakhvlari, you reach the start on other trailsAdd-on to a longer route

For most visitors with a single day, the Likani Valley is the simplest start, and the Footprint trail suits fit walkers. Register at the visitor centre first and take food and water. Ask at the centre whether the crossing between Sakhvlari and Marelisi is passable, and do not wade rivers.

Multi-day treks in the park

Four to plan with care.

Nikoloz Romanovi, 43 km

Three days from Likani to Marelisi, in stages of 15, 18 and 10 km.

St. Andrew, 54 km

Four days from Atskuri to Marelisi, in summer and autumn.

Panorama, 34 km

Two days on a loop from Atskuri, in stages of 16 and 18 km. It is rated hard, and the route passes tracks of bear, wolf and deer.

Zekari Overpass, 31 km

Two days from Abastumani, in stages of 8 and 23 km. Also rated hard.

Do not turn the stages into a day trip. The Shepherds' Trail (3 days) is another option; ask at the visitor centre for its current route. Hut beds cost GEL 20 to GEL 30 per person and day in 2026. Between October and April, sheepdogs can be near the herds.

Hiking near Bakuriani

A summer alternative above Borjomi.

Bakuriani lies at about 1,700 m on the northern slope of the Trialeti range and is a hiking and cycling region. In summer the lifts at Didveli run daily from 11:00 to 18:00 (from 6 July 2026), which helps for a mountain day. For a day walk, ask at your guesthouse for a marked route. The Bakuriani guide covers the road, the ski season and the narrow-gauge railway, which is under restoration.

Kazbegi and Svaneti

Bigger mountains, longer trips.

The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) takes about 2 hours 55 minutes, and to Mestia in Upper Svaneti about 7 hours 10 minutes. Neither is a day trip from Borjomi. Trekking conditions in the high mountains change from year to year, and mountain roads can close after landslides or floods. Check the current state of trails and roads before you book. For a route that links the regions, see the Georgia tours page.

Hiking around Borjomi: frequently asked questions

When is the best time to hike near Borjomi?

It depends on the walk. Flowers are in bloom from May to June, and St. Andrew trail is a summer and autumn route. Snowshoe walks run from December to February. Check conditions for ridge routes.

Do I need a guide?

For the marked park trails you register at the visitor centre and walk on your own if you wish. Multi-day routes and high mountain treks are easier with a guide who knows the current state of the paths.

Are there bears?

The Panorama trail passes tracks of bear and wolf. That shows they live in the park. It does not mean you will see one.

Can I hike to Kazbegi from Borjomi in a day?

No. The road from Tbilisi alone takes about 2 hours 55 minutes. Plan Kazbegi as its own trip.

Can I bring a dog?

No. Pets are not allowed in the national park.
