Georgia tours that include Borjomi

A route through Georgia usually starts in Tbilisi and fans out from there. Borjomi sits to the west, Kazbegi to the north, Kakheti to the east and Batumi on the Black Sea. Mestia in Upper Svaneti lies much farther away. Each region has its own climate and travel conditions, so there is no single season for the whole country.

The road times below are planning values between towns. Add stops, breaks, traffic and mountain weather. Pure driving time is not the same as sightseeing time, so a stop on the map is not a stop in the schedule until you add both.

The main-line train from Tbilisi to Batumi runs daily with departures between 08:00 and 13:35 and again between 17:10 and 22:45, so check the current times for your date. See getting there for the Borjomi connection.

Tours to Georgia: what a route can include

Pick stops by interest, then count the driving.

Tbilisi

The Old Town, the sulphur bath district and the cable car to Narikala. The fortress interior is under renovation, so the cable car is a viewpoint, not a way in.

Tbilisi and Borjomi โ†’

Borjomi, Rabati and Vardzia

A spa town with a park, a fortress complex in Akhaltsikhe and a cave monastery with a shortened route. This corner works best with a night in Borjomi.

Day trips from Tbilisi โ†’

Kakheti

Wine country with the qvevri method, which UNESCO recognizes since 2013. Sighnaghi and Telavi are the usual bases. Do not combine tastings with driving: the legal limit is 0.0 per mille.

Kakheti wine โ†’

Kazbegi

A mountain village north of Tbilisi, reached in under three hours by road. Plan it as its own leg, not an add-on after Borjomi.

Planning a longer Georgia route

Two weeks, a border crossing or a mountain pass.

A trip of two weeks fits the places above with room to spare, but the split into days is your own planning, not a fixed schedule. Use the road times to place one longer drive in each stretch and keep a spare half day for weather in the mountains.

Mountain roads can close because of landslides or floods, so passability cannot be promised for any date. If you want to add a country across the border, such as Armenia, check the border crossing and your rental car conditions before you book, because rules for crossing with a hire car differ. The Georgia holidays page covers entry rules and travel advice.

Georgia tours: frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for a Georgia route with Borjomi?

Borjomi with Rabati takes a full day, Vardzia another long day. With Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti, a week is tight and two weeks is comfortable. The days are yours to split.

Do I need a visa for Georgia?

German citizens can enter without a visa and stay up to 360 days, and US citizens up to 365 days. A passport is needed. Since 1 January 2026 you must also show health and accident insurance with at least GEL 30,000 of cover.

Are all areas of Georgia open to visitors?

Travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and to areas close to them, is strongly advised against by the German Foreign Office, and the US State Department gives them its highest warning level. Large cities can see regular protests. Check your government's travel advice before you go.

Can I drive a rental car myself?

An EU or international driving licence is accepted. Roads off the main routes can be in poor condition, and driving at night outside towns is not advised. Check the conditions of your rental company.

Is the train a good way to cross Georgia?

The main line links Tbilisi and Batumi. The Borjomi branch is covered on the getting there page. The narrow-gauge railway to Bakuriani is under restoration and not a way to plan around.
